Baby Steps

Baby Steps

As the year rounds anew, I've been steeped in thought, pondering life and what I might design for the next chapter. Not my first ruminating foray, but a seemingly important juncture that requires contemplation.

The journey is familiar. A simple quest to move life forward meaningfully spirals into a trip down the proverbial rabbit hole. A small idea quickly escalates into a full-blown, exciting and massive overhaul, my mind's eye drawing richly colored pathways down the 'where the F@#k are you going with this' highway?

"Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together."
— Vincent Van Gogh

Then it hits, and the grandeur of the endeavor begins to ignite stress. Stress breeds fear. Fear breeds worry. Worry breeds movement away from stress and fear. And then, with a perfectly respectable excuse to fall back on, "that is far too much to accomplish," life gently settles back into the familiar fray. And I end up right back where I started, not taking action.

In an odd twist, it's what makes me still love my career. Silicon Valley companies thrive on big dreams and grandiose visions, fertile ground for my curious aspirational spirit. I can hear a singular idea and visualize a two-year roadmap that brings it to life. For me it's a giant puzzle, and I get to create the pieces and then weave it into a beautiful tapestry.

Even SaturdaySays… started like that. One week into the idea, I had a business plan and a presentation that included a podcast, a new book, a multi-faceted social activation, a new website, a coaching practice, and a SaturdaySays… platform that would let people support each other. All well-intentioned ideas, fueling my passion of helping others reconnect with the light within. But geez, a bit overwhelming right out of the gate.

I've come to acknowledge the pattern; my head knows it's a brilliantly derived stall tactic to stay in the safe space of familiarity. It also gives me time to process, weed through the ideas, and let my heart guide me to the ones meant to come to fruition. If it's what I really want, it lingers somewhere deep inside. That slow simmer lets me push past the procrastination and take one step toward the change. Sometimes, one small step in the direction of your dreams is all you need to make it to step two and beyond.

So, while I will not be writing the international spy novel I contrived while playing Wordle this morning, I will be cleaning out that junk drawer today and writing another issue of Saturday Says…

Prompt: Are there changes that may be percolating within you? Possibly big things that tug at your heart or smaller tasks that ruminate in your head and take up precious space? Is there one action you could take this week to start?

—Saturday Says… aims to help you reconnect to the light that lives within. Whether revisiting, refreshing, rewriting, or simply reveling in its wonder, we all deserve to celebrate the extraordinary gifts we bring to the global collective. This journey is precious, and Saturday Says… gently invites you to take a moment and rediscover yourself. It's time to let the best of you, shine.
